On Sunday, July 20, 2008, an ice cream social and closing banquet for the Chernobyl Children Project (CCP) will be held in Somerville. This banquet will be a chance for the children and their host families to say a final farewell before their departure on July 24. The 73 children from Chernobyl have spent the last four weeks receiving much needed medical care from area hospitals. They have also enjoyed many social outings and wonderful opportunities to explore the United States and experience its customs. Their outings included soccer games, cookouts, a Boston Harbor Cruise and Trolley Tour. The closing banquet gives the children and their host families a chance to reflect on their experiences and spend some quality time together. The day will be a true celebration of good health, good friendships and of course, ice cream!
The children arrived in Boston on June 24 and were then placed with their host families for four weeks while they received medical care. CCP is the largest organization in the U.S. that provides medical treatment and respite care for children from the Chernobyl-affected areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Based in Boston, Chernobyl Children Project USA arranges medical care in the U.S. for children suffering from a wide variety of ailments and places them with volunteer host families during their stay.
