A ballroom at the World Trade Center filled with people clutching stuffed animals, handmade cards and signs, and flowers. They snacked on brownies and fruit and waited more than 90 minutes for their guests from across the Atlantic as a man came up to the podium several times to give progress reports: “The group has left New York.” “They’ve arrived in Boston.” And finally, “They are in the building.”
