John Guy LaPlante, at 80, is the oldest Volunteer of the nearly 8,000 serving around the world. He says he would much rather be the youngest!
He is posted to Chernihiv, less than 40 miles from Chernobyl. He is a university-level teacher of English as a Second Language and devotes attention also to other important projects. One is to computerize the 1-million-volume city library. Another is to develop a community web site explaining the city’s complex public transit system. And another is to run both a weekly English Club and a French Club — he speaks French fluently. He is a long-time journalist. He will return to the U.S. in December after the standard 27 months of service. He will publish a book about his experiences next spring.
